Acadia National Park Wildflowers Nature Photography Workshop

- Digital and Film Photography -
Cost - $745 before 3/15/09 - $845 after

June 26 - 30, 2009
Intensive 5 Day Nature Photography Field Workshop
Sunrise behind the Schoodic Peninsula from Western Point along the Park Loop road, Acadia National Park nature photography workshop
Acadia National Park is one of my favorite places in the world. The unique mix of glaciated mountains and lakes, streams and waterfalls, and wild, rocky, pink granite coastline offers a wonderful diversity of landscapes for the outdoor photographer. I often compare this landscape to shrinking the Adirondacks, turning the rock pink, and making it an island in the Atlantic. CEH

Soft, misty light and shoreline view from Otter Cliffs, Acadia National Park nature photo workshop
Tidal pools, surf pounding on rugged granite walls, subtle moods of mist and fog, sunrise breaking over the expanse of the Atlantic Ocean, cormorants, lighthouses, idyllic harbor villages, sea otters, lobster and sailing boats, starfish and anenomes, hiking trails, seals, cobblestone beaches, carriage paths, freshwater lakes and streams, primeval forests, deer and coyote, open mountain ridges, and the highest cliffs on the eastern US coastline
Sunset at the Bass Harbor Light, Acadia National Park nature photography workshop
Nature photography at Acadia is a mix of working with the everchanging weather and moods, in combination with the timing of the ebb and flow of the 10 to 14 feet tides. Mid to low tide reveals barnacles, kelp, and wonderful tidal pools; while mid to high tide is optimal for photographing the waves breaking on the rocky coast. A short driive to the alpine environment on the summit of Cadillac Mountain offers superb views of Mount Desert Island and the adjacent mountains, bays, and coastline.
360 degree view of the shoreline along the Ocean Drive - Acadia National Park photography clinic
Photographer, Carl Heilman, has been exploring the mountainous coastline of Acadia with a camera since the mid 1970's. Join Carl for an intensive 5 day nature photography workshop, working with some of the finest ocean landscapes in the east and experimenting with various techniques and equipment. The workshop is for photographers of all levels. A maximum of 12 participants, allows plenty of opportunities for individual interaction during and between the photo shoots.
The Acadia nature photography workshop is based in the beautiful and eclectic resort village of Bar Harbor, Maine. Lodging, a conference room, and a buffet breakfast has been set up with the ATLANTIC OAKES (800-336-2463) located on the shores of Frenchman's Bay just minutes from downtown Bar Harbor, the National Park Visitor's Center, and the main entrance to the Acadia National Park Loop road.

The workshop fee includes all instruction, related programs, buffet breakfast, and the first evening meal, but does not include the cost of transportation, lodging or additional meals. We are asking participants to stay at the Atlantic Oakes for the easiest group logistics. An ocean view room discount ($118. per night instead of $134.) has been arranged which can be extended 3 days prior to and 3 after the workshop dates if desired. Please mention you are registering for the Carl Heilman nature photography workshop when registering for lodging at the hotel.

We are asking participants to carpool and help the driver with expenses. If there are not enough drivers, we will need to rent a van which would be about an addiional $75. per person. We can carry 4 additional people in our minivan. A 7 day Acadia Park pass is $20. per car or $5. per person.

Please contact us if you need transportation to or from the Bangor Airport.

Subjects covered in the workshop will include natural light, composition, exposure, different equipment and techniques, digital workflow, image management, and basic Photoshop image enhancement. Most all facets of photography will be covered including wide angle, telephoto, fish-eye, and panoramic images and using various special camera effects with digital or film cameras.

The emphasis for the course is on photography in the field. With a maximum of 12 participants there will be extensive time for individual critique and instruction. In addition, Carl will work with his digital camera equipment and also his panoramic equipment to set up specific photographs and help teach through examples and use of a variety of equipment.

This workshop is rated MODERATE - while much of the photography will be reasonably close to the van, some locations may involve walking over slippery shoreline rocks and terrain, with hikes up to 3 - 4 miles round trip.

Detail along the trail to Otter Cliffs, Acadia National Park nature photo workshop with Carl Heilman II
June is a wonderful mix of pounding surf, gentle light, alpine flowers, lupines, flowering gardens, waterfalls, and cascades. Weather can bring any kind of mood to the rocky coast - so please be prepared for stormy weather - and perhaps a few late season black flies and some mosquitoes along the inland streams and waterways.
