I woke up early on our morning in Custer State Park, to perfect photography conditions. I quickly got together my gear and headed up Little Devils Tower to photograph the full panorama of Harney Peak, Cathedral Spires, and the town of Custer way off in the distance. It was still about 1/2 hour to sunrise when I got to the top, and the lights of Custer were still shining on the horizon off in the distance, with the moon hanging above them not too far above the horizon.

I began photographing in the pre-dawn glow of the early light, the plains off in the distance covered with fog. I continued to photograph periodically until this photo was taken about 20 minutes after sunrise, with the sunlight coming from the south of Harney Peak highlighting the Cathedral Spires, as well as many of the granite features and mountains off in the distance.
