Check out the 'Click and Move' view and the Zoomable View. Fall 1999 was an unusual year for fall colors. The extremely dry summer caused some leaves to drop off early without even turning color, while places that got enough moisture had spectacular colors. The quantity of sunshine during the summer seems to be directly related to the vividness of color in the leaves. If the Adirondacks had started getting some rainfall in August, the fall colors would probably all have been as spectacular as they were in 1997. There was a brilliant pocket of color around the base of Roaring Brook Falls this year - with the leaves hanging on much longer than they did in the hills nearby. I climbed up to the top of the lowest falls to set up the Roundshot and photograph this view. While the Great Range off in the distance was all socked in with clouds, the soft light being filtered through the moist air was quite nice for saturating the colors in the leaves.
