It was a warm summer day in July of 1998, when I hiked to the summit of Algonquin to do some photography for my upcoming book, Adirondacks: Views of an American Wilderness. It was a pretty calm day - for a mountain summit... There was a bit of haze in the air - which was perfect for the alpine flowers photography I wanted to do, but wasn't quite as clear as I prefer for mountain photography. Many folks, however, climb to the summit and never get to see more than the inside of a cloud! As the sun settled into the clouds, I took a few minutes from my flower photography to go up onto the summit rock and set up this panorama. Algonquin has one of the finest views in the Adirondacks! There are quite a few of the highest peaks nearby to the east, a nice view of Heart Lake, Mount Jo, and the Lake Placid area and Whiteface to the north, Iroquois and the Santanoni's to the south, and the Sewards and Street and Nye to the west. In another couple of hours, the clouds diminished, and the setting sun shone pink on the summit of Mount Marcy.
